I Stand In Awe – second verse
This is a song that you’re probably familiar with but if you’re like me you’ve never, ever seen the lyrics to the second verse. I came across them the other day on CCLI and they have been rattling around in my mind ever since. Wow!!
We will be singing this song on Sunday and I’m looking forward to the challenge of getting my congregation to get past the “beautiful”-ness of the lyrics to the real heart of what these words are saying – that God, majestic, royal, sovereign Creator of the universe came as a man, lived among His creation and then gave Himself up to death, even death on a cross. A brutal, agonizing, humiliating death – bruised for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities.
Of course, the good – no, great! – news in all of this is the next half of that verse from Isaiah 53: the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Read these words – the second verse lyrics which are new to me are in bold:
I Stand In AweAnd I stand I stand in awe of You
I stand I stand in awe of You
Holy God to whom all praise is due
I stand in awe of YouYou are beautiful beyond description
Too marvelous for words
Too wonderful for comprehension
Like nothing ever seen or heard
Who can grasp Your infinite wisdom
Who can fathom the depth of Your love
You are beautiful beyond description
Majesty enthroned aboveYou are beautiful beyond description
Yet God crushed You for my sin
In agony and deep affliction
Cut off that I might enter in
Who can grasp such tender compassion
Who can fathom this mercy so free
You are beautiful beyond description
