Psalm 117

Praise the LORD, all you nations;
extol him, all you peoples.

For great is his love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.Praise the LORD.

This week is all about celebrating God’s faithfulness. Praise the Lord.

Brenton Brown – Ontario tour dates

Brenton Brown (web|twitter) is one of my favourite songwriters – we do a bunch of his songs at our church. You may do them too and not even know that he wrote or co-wrote them. Everlasting God, Hosanna (Praise is Rising), Lord Reign in Me, Hallelujah, Our God Saves, All Who are Thirsty, Because of Your Love – all of these at least partly written by Brenton Brown. I’d say that’s a pretty good track record!

Brenton and his band are coming to Ontario this week for a few tour dates and I would really encourage you to attend if you are able. Brenton is talented, humble and genuine in his craft. You’ll be impressed by his ability but also his heart for the church and his desire for people to know more about Jesus. Brenton speaks very clearly about some of his own struggles and how those have led him to depend more and more on the love, grace and mercy of Christ. You will be encouraged!

Added bonus? My good friend Joshua Seller (web|twitter) was asked to open each of these dates on the tour so you’ll get the opportunity to hear TWO great worship leaders at every event. Joshua and I have co-written a couple of songs together but I’m not sure if he’s planning on playing either of them as part of these events.

As if that wasn’t enough, Brenton has agreed to be available for a worship leaders’ workshop before every event. Brenton and his band will run these workshops, give you some practical training and be available for Q&A as well. You can get more info on the workshops by sending an email to info@glassjargroup.com

Tickets are available here – TicketWindow

Event info for each of the dates is here -

Wednesday, May 25 – Sarnia Pentecostal Church in Sarnia, ON
Thursday, May 26 – Harvest Bible Chapel in Markham, ON
Friday, May 27 – Waterloo Pentecostal Assembly in Waterloo, ON
Sunday, May 29 – Harvest Bible Chapel in Oakville, ON

Encouragement for Songwriters

Last week I was invited to come and speak at the GMA Canada Ontario Conference held at Heritage College in Cambridge, ON. My friend Leroy Harder asked me to come to encourage some of the songwriters who would be there and to run a co-writing session for these Canadian artists looking to expand their ministry.

I was more than happy to do it and loved spending the day at the conference. In our session we had three groups of songwriters who were given some quick practical instruction on the process of co-writing and then they we released the hounds! Each group had only about an hour to work on a song before coming back to play what they had written for the other groups.

To start our session, I wanted to share some encouragement with them as songwriters. During the morning session I sent out a quick question on twitter and was then able to share the replies with them.

Hey friends – give me your one tweet encouragement for songwriters. What would you love to say to ppl writing songs for your church?

I had a bunch of replies come and I want to thank everyone that chimed in. Here’s a list of what came back -

Songwriters: share your work with others, finished  or not and weigh every opinion and critique.

Learn to write on the acoustic guitar. Make it singable and easy to play. Not too wordy but firmly based on the Word.

Make it about God, not us. And make sure it is biblically accurate.

Don’t write looking for a song to “cut” – look write a song that will “catch” hearts.

You don’t have to be Chris Tomlin, which is just fine with me.

Write truth about God and life. Don’t ask me to sing fairy tales or lies.

Seek the Lord, pray over your work and work hard. Pursue your songs with reckless abandon! Be fearless!

Keep writing, don’t give up.

Work on your craft. Allow others in to your process with you. Push for great songs that give voice to your church.

Don’t be afraid to write something that sounds different. use a few more chords. Write lyrics that are full sentences. Soar!

Challenge us with an interesting (lyrics, time signature, key, etc) song. We don’t always need to sing along.

Soak yourself in your church’s story. Listen to her Father’s heart for her. Enough with frothy lyrics, give us ancient truth.

More “we/us” songs and less “I/me”

Write songs that teach clearly AND stir our emotions.

Best idea wins, work together, serve your local community and worship even when no one’s watching.

Write songs that move you to want more of HIM! The church will follow!! We are called to LEAD – LEAD!!

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed their voice and wisdom to the process – @chickenmilker @markmcole @pjaygrimes @ellepyke @joshwah8 @leegunter @robrash @werdnartf @adamherod @michaelschutz @worshipbassist @xxwickchickxx @jonmanna @iamanoffering @dsantistevan @kevinpauls

What about you? Got any encouragement you’d like to give to people writing songs for your church?

“Sovereign Grace Ministries is a family of churches that exists to glorify God by establishing and serving local churches with the gospel. One way we do that is by writing songs, like these, that enable the word of Christ to dwell in us richly (Col. 3:16). We pray you’ll join your voice with ours as we seek to magnify our matchless Savior.”

Worship & Arts Pastor Position – Kamloops, BC

My favourite Englishman-living-in-Egypt Mark Jaffrey gave me the heads up on this job posting for a Worship & Arts Pastor at Kamloops Alliance Church in beautiful British Columbia. They are looking for someone with experience to fill this full-time position.

You can find more info on the church here – www.kamloopsalliance.com

If you’re interested in a job description and applying for this position, have a look at what they’ve posted here.

Again, this isn’t a position that I’m hiring or that my church is looking to fill. Leaving comments here or emailing me won’t do you much good! :)

Prayer & Fasting

May is an important month in the life of our church so our pastor called us to a day of prayer & fasting yesterday. Both of these are significant disciplines and by making them part of the rhythm of our lives we express our dependence on God and allow Him to speak clearly in to our lives.

Three things happening in May that are very significant for our congregation:

  • On May 1 we are asking our members to approve our elders’ desire to move ahead on a process of name change for our church
  • On May 7 we are sending hundreds of people in to the community as part of our annual Single Moms Home Day
  • On May 28 & 29 we are celebrating God’s faithfulness over the past 150 years of the life of our church

Each of those three things are significant and we wanted to be reminded again that God is at work in our church and in our community. Spending the day (or part of the day) in prayer and fasting was done not so that God would hear us and bless our efforts but so that we would hear clearly from Him, that we would turn away from the things that are life-sustaining (if only for one day) and turn to Him to express our need and dependence.

Have you ever given yourself to an extended time of prayer and fasting? Did God speak?

John 10:2-4 “The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”

What’s The Story?

Alright, Easter weekend is behind us and all of you worship leaders have had your restless nights, your “helpful” comments, your debrief meetings, your second thoughts and your exciting memories of what happened this weekend.

So I want to know – what’s the story? Tell us a story of something significant that happened at your church this weekend.

Me? I’ve got two -

  1. At the end of both services we saw lots of people respond in pretty significant ways (some placing their faith in Christ, some acknowledging that Christ is Lord of their whole lives) including several people we have been praying for for YEARS. Very encouraging.
  2. Towards the end of “Christ Is Risen” by Matt Maher we do this big celebration thing where the band just plays a couple chords and we sing “He’s alive! He’s alive! He’s alive! Our God is not dead, He’s alive!” over and over. We’ve done this a few times now and during our 11:00 service the crowd started clapping and cheering as we were doing that part of the song. Chills. Very special moment.

So.. let’s go. What’s the story?

Easter Sunday thoughts

Easter Sunday. Not sure it gets any better than that. Packed house for both services, lots of family and friends and people from our community making their annual pilgrimage :) The beauty of knowing that visitors are coming (and we plan for and expect visitors every week) is that you can be praying and preparing for them to respond when they hear the great news of the resurrection. Of course the challenge is that people (not just visitors) go in to “I’ve heard it all before” mode very quickly so you’ve got to present the timeless truth of the gospel in a way that may penetrate an already hardened or indifferent heart.

We’ve been working our way through the gospel of Mark over the past 6 or 7 weeks and on Sunday we finished the series by looking at the resurrection account in Mark 16. As you read, you can’t help but notice the obvious presence of both doubt AND belief from those who have encounters with the risen Christ. Over and over people are told about the resurrection, they are afraid and they don’t believe. Then an encounter with Jesus and they move from doubt to belief. They go to tell others but the others don’t believe. Until they meet Jesus. Incredible.

Let me sidestep here and say that this should be very encouraging to those of you who are in leadership positions at your church and may not be seeing the fruit of lives changed by the gospel. Even those who were in the presence of Jesus himself after the resurrection were not able to convince his closest friends – the ones who had spent three years with Jesus, witnessed the miracles… he even told them three times he would be killed and then alive three days later. And those guys couldn’t be convinced by those who had seen Jesus alive, until they had an encounter themselves. This should be encouraging to you. Pray for Jesus to reveal himself to people who need to know him.

Here’s what our Easter Sunday service looked like -

Everlasting God – Brenton Brown – Bb
Our God – Chris Tomlin – Bb
“He Is Risen!” responsive reading
Christ The Lord Is Risen Today – Bb -> C
Offering
Congregational Prayer
Video –  Skit Guys “Grace”
We Will Run – Gungor – E
Forever Reign – Hillsong – C
Christ Is Risen (chorus/bridge) – Matt Maher – F
Message – Mark 16
I Stand In Awe – Mark Altrogge – A

Three things about our service on Sunday that I want to share with you -

  • A couple of really special moments yesterday. At the end of “Christ Is Risen” we normally do this big ending where we just give people a chance to declare and celebrate  - “He’s alive! He’s alive! Our God is not dead, he’s alive!” Yesterday people starting clapping and cheering while we were singing that part. I’ll remember that for a long, long time. Incredible.
  • We’ve been praying for some people in our church to come to Christ for YEARS and we saw several of them respond yesterday. We’re doing some follow-up to work through that response and decision but God was clearly at work. Amen.
  • I posted this yesterday on twitter – “Worship leaders, don’t let the Pharisees in your church decide if your service was ‘good enough.’ It will never be good enough for them.” I can’t even tell you the kind of response I got from that. It clearly struck a chord. If you feel like nothing you did was appreciated, people were focused on singing the “right” songs rather than focusing on Jesus, if people just deflated you with their words as soon as the service was over know that you are not alone. Jesus is still risen. The gospel is still true. And Pharisees are still present.

Easter Sunday

Mark 16

The Resurrection
1 When the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back—it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized them, and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
9 Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. 11 But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it.

Jesus Appears to Two Disciples
12 After these things he appeared in another form to two of them, as they were walking into the country. 13 And they went back and told the rest, but they did not believe them.

The Great Commission
14 Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. 15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

19 So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.
