Worship leaders are often responsible for much more than just leading the songs on Sunday morning and designing the services. Planning and implementing an audition process for the worship often shows up on worship leader job descriptions and yet there often isn’t much clarity on how the worship leader should proceed with this or how it can be implemented in a really great way.
How worship leaders decide to audition new musicians or singers for their worship is one of those things which can push your ministry forward or hold you back. If your audition process is too cumbersome and complicated, people will opt out or it will be unsustainable. If your audition process lacks clarity or purpose, people won’t know how to engage and you’ll miss out.

So what am I covering in this ebook?
For me the audition process starts with a key assumption – that HEART and HANDS both matter. Or as I say in Audition For Change, ABILITY and COMPATIBILITY are both important. This relates to a verse which has been key for me in thinking about leadership and worship at my church:
“And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” Psalm 78:72
What a great picture of the importance of both HEART and HANDS when it comes to leadership and specifically to worship.
“She’s got a great heart!” Not enough. “That dude can wail!” Not enough. We need to be focused on and paying attention to both the HEART and HANDS, or ABILITY and COMPATIBILITY of our worship team members. Audition For Change lays out how we watch for both at my church and make both a priority.
There is a leadership tightrope to walk here and if this ebook can be a resource for you and your team, great! I’ve included some discussion questions at the end of each section to get you thinking about how certain principles can be applied in your own setting. There’s no sense in just hitting copy + paste on what I do but there are some underlying principles here which will apply on some level to every situation. Read through the different sections of the ebook, take some time to reflect and discuss the questions with your team and then design a process around what you are trying to achieve.
Audition For Change is the second free ebook I’ve released this year (the first was for guitar players on How To Use A Capo) and hopefully these are resources you find helpful and encouraging. I certainly don’t have all the answers or have it all figured out but if we can learn together then our churches are better for it!
