Portable Baptistry – anyone using this?

Hey blog-peeps – I’m wondering if anyone uses some kind of portable setup for baptisms. I’m not talking about going to someone’s house or to a lake or something to do a baptism but I mean do you have some kind of portable tank that you bring in to your auditorium/sanctuary on the days that you are doing baptisms as part of your service??

I’m specifically looking for people who are using Portable Baptistry and one of their setups -

Portable Baptistry - grand package

Use it? Love it? Hate it? Looking for some insight!

UPDATE: We’ve used the portable baptistry for two baptism services and it’s gone pretty well so far. We’ve had to come up with a bit of a system for the way we do but it’s working out! Moving our tank so that it’s pretty much front and centre during our services has been a good thing.

  1. Chris – I’ve never even heard of it, but I wanted to say that my initial reaction was to make fun of it – then I realized how practical it is for a church plant/portable church – I’ll be interested to hear more about it (we may be going portable soon, and this would work great, in my mind)

We are a portable church. We meet every Sunday at our community’s Civic Auditorium. We have to build and break down everything every Sunday.

When we have baptisms we actually use a huge trough that we bought. We had a prop guy build us a really sweet wood casing to help with the looks, but that’s what we use.

I’ll grab a picture next time we set it up. It’s pretty cool.

When I was at Revolution, we didn’t use that, but instead we had a kiddie blow up pool that we blew up and used for baptisms. It was lots of fun and definitely worked for the vibe of our church.

Across the street up here in Santa Cruz, Dan Kimball is using that baptistry at Vintage Faith. Check out a few blogs he wrote on it for more info.

Believe it or not, my church used to use a horse-trough. (Cue jokes here… lots of them.) Then for fancy baptism services, we would rent a hot tub. Nice! I think both are nicer alternatives than the pond with goose-poop! :)

  5. Yup! We use a soft sided spa just like that all we add is a mic and a rubber ducky (long time tradition)

Living Word A.G., Ontario NY and Calvary A.G., Rochester NY both purchased and use the Portable Baptistry pictured here. Both churches use the portable electric heater, pump, grand staircase, splashguard, and thermal cover without any problems. To date, I have personally setup and torndown both units multiple times…. so far, I have failed to even come close to the 20->30 minute target times, but I will keep trying.

we are just examining this product. However the Canadian company and manufacurer Soft Tub may be able to provide a product at a cheeer price. It would not tear down…but simply roll away as it is also round. you can reach me through the website if you want me to keep you informed of our research.

  10. Sounds like people have had good experiences with it.

Jeremy – the “tearing down” part is big for us. We are essentially a portable church within our own building because we meet in our gym. Being able to store the tank quickly and efficiently is very important for us. So far, so good!

Chris, How have you like the baptistry so far? Our church is thinking of getting this and want to know how it went for you.

I’m also another Chris, from Canada (a darker version) LOL. We have used the exact baptistry shown from our sister church, as our location temporary and therefore we have to setup and teardown every single week. We have used this pool twice and have to say that it is the best investment EVER! Strong words, but because we have used other portable baptism units, this is by far the easiest, and the MOST portable we’ve ever used. We are in the process of purchasing one as soon as possible.
