Wreck This Journal
My re:create friend Nathan posted about a book he bought called “Wreck This Journal” and it immediately grabbed my attention. I ordered a copy from Amazon yesterday and it arrived today. Look at how excited I am!!
Here’s the description from the publisher’s website -
For anyone who’s ever wished to, but had trouble starting, keeping, or finishing a journal or sketchbook comes Wreck This Journal, an illustrated book that features a subversive collection of prompts, asking readers to muster up their best mistake- and mess-making abilities to fill the pages of the book (and destroy them). Acclaimed illustrator Keri Smith encourages journalers to engage in “destructive” acts-poking holes through pages, adding photos and defacing them, painting with coffee, and more-in order to experience the true creative process. Readers discover a new way of art and journal making-and new ways to escape the fear of the blank page and fully engage in the creative process.
So yeah. I’m excited about this. Especially because the next month or so is going to be absolute bananas. This book will be my creative outlet and I hope will spur some new thoughts inside the ol’ noggin. I’ll keep you in the loop.
Here’s the first page I completed to give you an idea of what it’s all about.

P.S. I don’t normally link photos but if you’re up for an adventure click the picture and let’s play the game of “What was Chris figuring out on his whiteboard?“

Hmmm…well, I give up on the whiteboard. I wanna know about the pencil holes. Were you angry? Happy? Formulaic? Creative? Linear? All over the place?
That’s a great idea for a journal; I’m curious. I’d love an excuse to make a big mess and call it ‘creative’. Might have to try it.
Great idea, indeed!
Pencil holes – when I first looked I assumed that I would poke through the “dotted” holes but then I wanted to do one that wasn’t instructed. I think that’s the idea of the book – take the suggestion and run with it.
I’m ordering the book.
I think you were figuring out the assimilation process, how to connect and follow-up with visitors
lol – that pic cracks me up man. When I saw it in the reader I was hoping it’d actually be a video filled with all sorts of Chris Vacher antics.
Alas it was only a photo of you figuring how to respond to and follow up guests who visit by tweeking the comment card.
hey Chris,
cool journal. actually i saw you pull one out one day at lunch and thought… hmmm. i need to get me one of those…
so i did… course mine is blank and not near as cool as you but i’m new to this whole thing and haven’t had time to experience the need for creative ideas as this is my first go at it… but i’ll let you know how it goes…
as for the whiteboard…
I’m with travis on the whole assimilation thing. And i am interested in what your Canadian readers think about assimilation in Canada… everything i’ve ever heard comes from the south… and no offense intended but… well… yeah. enough said.
you should so totally combine the themes of this post & create a ‘wreck this comment card’ for visitors.
wow, nice find! getting prepped for this next week, cause i’m sure you’re going to be loving it, hope it goes great. get some paint on yourself for me.
great to hear about love is here…how’d it go over, and how did you do it without electrics?
oh! i like that. i’ve NEVER been good at journaling.
but, one thing: i would’ve poked holes outside of the pre-indicated hole poking areas, and ignored the little circles to poke in. i’m beginning to think i’m a bit weird.
Hey Man,
I used to blog all the time, then took some time off, and now I’m back at it again. Could I get some link love (you’re linked on mine), brotha?
I’m over @ blogsology.wordpress.com
Thanks & Peace!
